VOICES is holding its 22nd annual music composition contest for children and a free workshop on February 15, 2010 for children 5 to 12.

"...a great opportunity for children to develop their musical talent and get feedback from a professional composer."

"Every child has some ability to sing, dance, and play instruments. Babies coo and gurgle, swoop and imitate. Is this singing or language? Every child who learns how to talk has the ability to sing. Singing, speaking, dancing are all natural and to be shared. Let your 5 year old or 8 year old thrive on creating a song or a dance about a birthday, holiday, family event, or any topic of special interest to him or her. The benefit to the child is in the creation, the pulling together of previous experiences in order to make something new. Most children love to perform and will want their creation acknowledged and applauded."

—Lyn Ransom, VOICES Music Director and Co-author at Music Together Preschool

Since 1987, the VOICES Music Composition Contest for Children has provided over 375 young composers with the impetus to write music. The composition program also provides song-writing workshops led by Lyn Ransom and other VOICES members for local children, and opportunities for classroom and piano teachers to make music theory concrete and to stimulate creative thinking. All children who enjoy music are encouraged to attend and participate.

VOICES' Music Composition Contest is a great opportunity for children to develop their musical talent and get feedback from a professional composer.

  • Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to compose a piece of music with a vocal element.
  • Write it down in traditional or child-invented notation.
  • Make a cassette or CD-R recording.
  • Submit the recording and three written copies, together with the application form identifying the child's name and age, assisting adult's name, phone number, address, and the child's background in music, together with a $5.00 processing fee, to:

VOICES Composition Contest, P.O. Box 404, Pennington, NJ 08534.

Deadline for submissions is March 1, 2010.

An established composer will review all entries, and children will receive feedback and encouragement on their submissions. Over half of the entrants will receive a prize, a pint of ice cream. Others will be "runners-up."

A Free Songwriter's Workshop for Children ages 5 to 12 will also be held on Monday, February 15 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Music Together, 66 Witherspoon Street, Princeton, NJ.

Children who enjoy music are encouraged to attend. They will improvise rhymes based on poems and chants, and create melodies from short phrases. Topics will be those of interest to children: food, animals, parents, vehicles, funny situations, etc., and the children will learn how to create rhythmic accompaniment. Selected compositions will be performed at the VOICES Young Composers Concert, which will take place on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Music Together Community Room, 225 Pennington-Hopewell, Rd., Hopewell, NJ.

For more information, or to register for the free workshop, please contact Debbie Gwynne, Program Chair, at 609-397-0756 or email dgmusica@comcast.net.
